FilterWell - Portable Pocket Water Filter
You may never need one of these... on the other hand it could just save your life!
There are a few different ways these water filters can be used. They can be carried with you as a back-up to fresh water that you may already carry in containers, and/or they can be used to filter water from other water sources, like lakes, streams and rivers, as you go.
At 1 kilo per 1 litre, water can prove to be a considerable weight burden in your pack, so being able to filter water and utilise lakes, streams, etc., whilst on the go can save you a lot of weight.
On long hikes we tend to carry 2.5 litres of water and top up with fresh water when and where we can. But we now always carry a FilterWell with us just in case the need arises.
The great thing about these little filters is they are extremely compact and weigh very little - 37g (71g with the sand filter and tubing).
This particular filter features a standard 28mm bottle screw thread which means that it will attach securely (and almost universally) to most plastic bottles. It has this screw thread on both ends so a bottle can be attached to catch the filtered water and/or force unfiltered water through the filter, by squeezing the bottle. Also, time allowing, and with a bit of ingenuity you can hang it and let it gravity slowly filter the water into a clean container (see photo below).
The included silicone tubing has an attached sand filter so the unit can be used as a straw whereby you can suck up and drink water directly from a natural water source (again, see photo below).
We always carry an aluminium 1 litre water bottle with us along with a 500ml plastic bottle and a 1 litre plastic bottle. The fresh water in plastic bottles is used up first as we then have empty bottles for use with the FilterWell if we need them. We would not be without our FilterWell now, it is one of those things that you will never miss until you may really need it. When carried with you the FilterWell makes for a nice, lightweight, water insurance policy.
Back-flushing and care of the filter after use will prolong it's life, which if looked after is good for 4000 litres - Instructions included.
Do note however, that whilst they filter down to 0.01 microns - which filters all small living organisms, protozoa and the likes of bacteria - it will not filter chemical toxins, so never take water from stagnant or suspect water sources where there might have been chemicals discharged or pollution is evident.

Multi-Purpose Lightweight Camping Hammer/Mallet
Features
A very handy multi-purpose camping hammer with some very useful features.

The lanyard is to put around your wrist when in use, and is to stop the hammer potentially slipping or jerking dangerously out of your hand.
Weight is kept down to just 500 grams be reducing the cast iron material in the head and by employing a hollow, but strong aluminium handle.
The head has a claw to extract stubborn nail pegs and also features a handy bottle opener.

Windproof Camping Stove/Fire Lighter AW-731
These are a very nice quality refillable lighter, ideal for lighting campfires or camping stoves.
Made from tough nylon and metal with a high temperature ceramic insert inside the nozzle, these lighters are 110mm in length, 32mm at their widest and weigh in at just 53 grams empty.
We looked at many different lighters, weighing up all the various pros and cons, before we finally settled on stocking the AW-731. These lighters are well made with a combination of metal and hard nylon that sets them apart from similar lighters that are less costly but all cheap plastic. These lighters look and feel like a quality item and just fits the bill for camping - lighting stoves, lighting fires, and indeed as an emergency fire starter.
Large enough to feel comfortable in the hand, without being too large and bulky. The single turbo flame is adjustable and capable of lighting stoves and fires in windy conditions, and unlike many lighters, this lighter has quite a large capacity, visible fuel reservoir.
Refillable with standard butane lighter fluid.
