We are amazed by how few cycling helmets have protective bug mesh over the vents, and those that do seem to have it on the inside close to your head which often means that your head is still in reach of a stinger.
It can be unpleasant enough getting any creepy-crawly flying into your bike helmet open vent and feeling it mooching about on your head, but if that bug happens to be a disgruntled wasp or a bee, then you can be in for a nasty sting.
During the summertime flying insects are abundant and if a biting/stinging variety gets stuck in one of your bike helmet vents you can be in for a nasty shock that may not only leave you with a painful reaction, but also cause you to panic and come off your bike.... and some people tend to panic the moment they even feel any insect in a helmet vent.
