Some people just prefer some designs of tent pegs over other designs, some people choose a peg that more often suits their camping environment, whilst others are influenced by the weight of the tent peg.

Whilst it will be too heavy and impractical for use as a solo backpacking tent, our STORMBORN makes for a strong and roomy two person tent when the load is split between two backpackers. Of course for the motorcyclist or car camping then the pack size and weight will be far less of an issue for solo campers. For one person, the sleeping area and storage space of the STORMBORM is relatively enormous.
The semi-geodesic design of our STORMBORN has a three pole structure whereby the tent poles cross each other at four points. This makes for a relatively strong and stable structure that is also free-standing once the poles are fed through the flysheet sleeves and clipped in. This design means that our STORMBORN can typically cope with more extremes of wind and weather than our other two person tents.
The STORMBORN is a flysheet first pitching tent, which will no doubt please many people. This means that the flysheet is erected with the tent poles first, and the inner tent is attached afterwards. The inner tent can also then be left attached if desired, so that the tent erects as one in future. And of course being a flysheet first pitching tent you can, should you choose, leave the inner tent off altogether and just use the flysheet as a shelter, so substantially reducing weight and bulk.
The flysheet is in a nice dark forest green and is made from polyurethane-coated, 210T ripstop polyester with a 3000mm hydrostatic head (HH). The inner tent bathtub floor is made from a slightly heavier, more durable Oxford weave 190D polyurethane-coated polyester with a 5000mm HH rating. All seams are tape sealed in order to make them waterproof. As with most of our other tents, we went with polyester fabric rather than a slightly lighter nylon fabric for the flysheet, and as always the reason being that polyester does not absorb water, stretch and hence sag like nylon does when wet. And given our STORMBORN may potentially face a lot of inclement weather here in the UK, continually having to readjust the flysheet and guyline tensions of a sagging nylon flysheet would be a pain. Not only this, but because nylon fibres actually absorb water, a nylon flysheet will take far longer to dry out than if polyester, and if you pack it wet you may indeed be carrying a considerable additional weight in water! Polyester also tends to have better natural UV resistance than nylon. Suffice to say, though very slightly heavier, this is why we always tend to prefer polyester over nylon for our flysheets.
The three ProFlex tent poles are made from 8.5mm 7001-T6 aluminium alloy that has been anodised for greater corrosion protection. The two poles that go from the back of the tent to the front are of equal lengths and one that goes from side to side is slightly shorter. They are colour coded to make it obvious which are which.
With a sleeping area internal floor plan of 210cm in length by 160cm at the head end, reducing to 130cm at the foot end, this tent provides a very good size interior space for two people, though it will sleep three people at a push. In fact some similar design of tents at this size are promoted as three person tents - see the floor plan diagram. However, we think it is much better suited as a comfortable two person tent. Head room is good too, peaking at 120cm, which means no one should have trouble sitting up.
Using high quality materials we have managed to keep the total weight of our STORMBORN down to just 3.5kg. The 3.5kg weight includes everything - bags, straps, guyline, aluminium pegs, etc. But note, this weight does not include the additional universal groundsheet that is provided with the tent. Our STORMBORN is also available with our aluminium alloy 10g V-Pegs which brings the total weight down to 3.42kg, or our Superlite 5g titanium tent pegs which brings the total weight down further to 3.35kg.
The use of the included universal groundsheet is optional, and may never be required depending on where you choose to pitch. Made from tough Oxford weave 210D PU-coated polyester with a hydrostatic head of 4000mm, the groundsheet measures 300cm x 160cm and weighs 590 grams. When backpacking you may feel that the additional 590 grams of weight simply cannot be justified, but for motorcycle and car camping this weight is unlikely to be an issue. The groundsheet obviously provides extra protection to the bathtub floor of the STORMBORN from sharp objects whilst also adding an extra layer of waterproofing, but it also extends into the porch/vestibule area of the tent which is otherwise bare open ground.
The large 140cm x 110cm vestibule area of the STORMBORN provides plenty of space for gear storage, and/or an undercover cooking area. You will notice that the flysheet doors open from near to the inner tent to away from it. We noted that some tents of similar design, and for some unknown reason, have flysheet doors that open from the far corners back towards the inner tent. But this would mean having to stretch right out to the far corners and potentially move packs, boots, etc just to reach the zip toggle in order to open and close the doors. It just seemed logical to us to have our doors open more conveniently from near the inner tent.
Whilst there are two doors on the flysheet towards the front of the tent which allow entry and exit from either side, the inner tent has just the one door. The inner tent is made mostly of full fabric breathable polyester, but does feature a mesh triangle at the back. The inner tent door is a nice double door that features both full polyester and bug mesh fabrics, either of which can be open and closed independently in order to regulate warmth, aid air flow and improve ventilation. There are also three vents on the flysheet to provide good air circulation between the inner tent and the flysheet. Other features include a pocket on either side of the sleeping area, along with a hook for a lamp above the door.
Being a 3/4 season tent our STORMBORN will be warmer in colder weather than tents such as our SAGE that features a full mesh inner tent. In warmer weather the three flysheet vents will allow warm air out and so maintain some air circulation between the inner tent and the flysheet, and in colder weather these vents will likewise help reduce condensation. The triangular mesh panel at the back of the inner tent is inline with the rear flysheet vent so this can provide some direct air flow, whilst the inner tent double door can be used with just the mesh option to increase air through-flow, and so improve overall ventilation. Of course the flysheet door/s can also be left open in warmer weather.
Also of note is that, unlike many other tents, the inner tent door on our STORMBORN opens in an upside down U. This is a design consideration that is to protect the zip. In many other tents the door will open to one side or the other, but in the long term this tends to leave the zip at the door bottom vulnerable to damage. When the door opens to a side, this means that you will always have to clamber over the teeth of the zip when entering and exiting. Over time, particularly with a 4 season tent the zip can become damaged or clog up with various bits of dirt or debris and become difficult to operate, or indeed fail. Having no zip at the bottom totally alleviates this potential issue. The inner tent door on our STORMBORN can simply be rolled up neatly (see photos) with never any danger of damaging the zip when clambering in and out.
Unlike some tents that come with the tiniest of tent bags, our STORMBORN comes with a generous oversized, easy access tent bag for fast, easy packing, whilst also featuring compression straps to cinch it up if necessary.
