LD98-1200 Rechargeable Bicycle LED Headlight
The above run times are what can be expected from 100% fully charged. Approximately 6 hours to charge from depleted batteries to full charge.
As well as being a rather classy, high quality product, our LD98-1200 bicycle headlight has some really impressive features not found on many other bike headlights.
No power supply is included as these headlights are recharged via any standard 5V USB port - wall socket USB port, car USB port, PC USB port or a USB power bank, via the included USB - mini USB Type-C cable.
Our LD98-1200 has it all. With its plethora of lighting options, not only is it suitable for cycling and commuting in various scenarios, but it also has some really neat features.
Firstly, in order not to blind oncoming traffic and other road users, one lovely feature is to be able to go from high beam to dipped beam at just the push of a button. The high and the dipped beam use different LEDs and different beam patterns with the dipped beam LEDs giving a warmer light and providing a wider floodlit area.
We're not a fan of fast epileptic fit inducing strobes, so our LD98-1200 has a nice steady 2Hz flash mode for daylight running. There is also a genuine SOS feature should you ever need it, and of course the headlight is easily detached from its mounting clamp if ever required to be used as a handheld torch.
As opposed to many headlights that still use the inferior micro USB charge points, the LD98-1200 is charged via the more modern and superior USB to mini USB Type-C (cable included). Any standard USB outlet can be used to charge the LD98-1200.
Along with a modern mini USB Type-C charging port, the LD98 also features a standard USB output and so can double as a power bank if need be. The USB output is a very useful feature and can be used to add charge to any small device such as a mobile phone. Note too, the ports are covered by a substantial silicon cover - much better than many of the very flimsy covers seen on other headlights. Just remember to always secure the silicon cover firmly in place after using the ports to prevent any dust, debris or water ingress.
The digital LED display is a really nice feature that provides you with a clear indication of how much energy you have used and how much is left in the batteries. When charging it also indicates the batteries state of charge, with 100% being fully charged.
Finally, the electronics incorporated in the LD98 not only provide constant current technology, whereby high brightness is maintained over a long period with no noticeable dimming until the batteries are very low, but also provides over-charging, over-discharging, over-heating and short circuit protection.
With the intention of stocking just a couple of very good bicycle headlights, we acquired various samples and looked at many different types of bicycle headlights from various manufacturers. Factors of importance to us were: LED/s employed, functions, incorporated battery, casing, waterproofness, and overall quality.
Ultimately we settled on two bicycle headlights; this one, the LD98-1200 for cycling on dark unlit roads and dark country lanes, and the less powerful WB500 for cycling and commuting in urban areas where the high power of our LD98-1200 would not be required.

WB500 Rechargeable Bicycle LED Headlight
The WB500 is is a very nice quality bicycle headlight suitable for urban cycling and commuting.
Though we dismissed many bicycle headlights we looked at for various reasons, the WB500 ticked all of our boxes for a good quality urban cycling headlight.
It features a powerful CREE XM-L T6 LED that provides a maximum of 500 lumens, which is plenty for urban cycling, and it also has a nice steady slow flash mode for daylight cycling. A very nice quality acrylic lens, while providing a 85° floodlit area, also has an anti-glare height cut-off to help prevent blinding other road users and oncoming traffic.
The WB500 does also have a true SOS mode, which may never be needed, but then could prove useful in an emergency situation. There is also a epilepsy inducing strobe (fast flash) mode that we can never really see the point of and always find rather annoying - this strobe mode is something that we would never use ourselves, and indeed this would have been a deal-breaker had the WB500 not also featured the slow flash mode.
Though designed primarily as a cycling headlight, the WB500 with its tough aluminium alloy casing also makes for a good, reliable, and user friendly handheld torch.
As opposed to many headlights that still use the inferior micro USB charge point, both the WB500 and our LD98-1200 are charged via the included more modern and superior USB to USB Type-C cable. Any standard USB outlet can be used to charge these bicycle headlights.
